A final measure of central tendency is the mode. The mode is the value that occurs most often within the observed values of the variable. Typically, this measure of central tendency is useful when the variable values were rounded. If no variable value repeats, then technically, all variable values are modes because they all appear exactly once, but that is not often useful information.  If values were rounded to say, integers, then the mode would be the integer that appears most often in the set of observed data values.

Example

In the example above, for female fiddler crabs, 7.5 mm occurs the most often as the size of the largest claw. It is in fact, the only variable value to repeat at all.

Excel

In Excel, the mode is computed using the *mode* function.
